We’re already one day into the competition and I’m psyched that so many of you are participating. When the Google Form closed, 118 people filled out, with the Bluesky polls , with additional votes coming from Bluesky (the number varied anywhere from 11 to 20 people). If that’s only the first day, I can’t wait to see what happens the further we get into March!

And for some non-Knit Madness news, I went long on Heated Rivalry’s viral fleece for Roger Ebert today, so go check it out—along with the rest of the fantastic articles going up for Women Writers Week!

Today’s Matchups

Ready for today’s matchups? Get started with Google Forms, and/or make your way through the Bluesky polls, which you can find below.

Voting will close on Thursday, March 5, two days from now.

Matchup: (1) Twin Peaks vs (16) A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas

Credits: Paramount+ | YouTube

(1) Twin Peaks (2×18, “On the Wings of Love”)

The Sweater: A brown and white Cowichan cardigan

Who Wore It: Margaret "The Log Lady" Lanterman (Catherine E. Coulson), one of the many quirky but extremely perceptive residents of Twin Peaks, Washington.

Replica: Yes (and yes) [I’m including two versions of the cardigan because I found both a fan-made version and a vintage Mary Maxim pattern, but it only got one allotment of the 10-point bonus per the rules.]

Notes: Twin Peaks is a spoil of riches in its knitwear, so it was a lot more difficult than you’d think to narrow it down; early in the process, I actually had a different Twin Peaks knit but I left it out this year because I needed to fill a cardigan spot. But I think I’m happy with where I landed.

(16) A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas

The Sweater: A blue sweater with a green Christmas tree on it. The tree is decorated with lights attached to the tree, and there is a star on top

Who Wore It: Carlos Perez (Danny Trejo), Harold’s (John Cho) father-in-law

Replica: No

Notes: I know almost nothing about the entire Harold & Kumar franchise except that the first one is set in New Jersey, but Danny Trejo looks very good in his Christmas knit!

Matchup: (2) Wicked: For Good vs (15) Peter Hujar’s Day

Credits: Prime Video | Janus Films

(2) Wicked: For Good

The Sweater: A gray duster cardigan with diamond-shaped holes in the back and ABSOLUTELY NONE OF THE ENDS WOVEN IN

Who Wore It: Elphaba Thropp (Cynthia Erivo), who’s idea of being wicked is putting on a cozy and unfinished cardigan before getting down.

Replica: Yes (but this version doesn’t appear to have the diamond-shaped holes in it)

Notes: For about a couple of weeks at the end of November/beginning of December, Elphaba’s Sex Cardigan was the It Sweater, but then it went the way of Wicked: For Good’s Oscars chances: Basically vanished.

(15) Peter Hujar’s Day

The Sweater: A green, white, and black Aztec cardigan

Who Wore It: Linda Rosenkrantz (Rebecca Hall), a writer who recorded her friend Peter Hujar (Ben Whishaw) recounting what happened to him the day before in 1974.

Replica: No

Notes: Peter Hujar’s Day seems like an unlikely candidate for this, but the moment that Linda’s cardigan showed up on the screen, I paused my screener and stared.

Matchup: (3) The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air vs (14) Practical Magic

Credits: Hulu | Prime Video

(3) The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (2×13, “Christmas Snow”)

The Sweater: A blue, white, red, and green sweater. In the middle and on white is a red truck with a Christmas tree in the trunk

Who Wore It: Carlton Banks (Alfonso Ribeiro), the enthusiastic dancer of the Banks family (and the constant foil to Will Smith’s fictionalized version of himself).

Replica: No

Notes: For some cinematic sweaters, you have to dig a little to figure out what brand made it. But Carlton’s is easy: It’s a Polo Ralph Lauren sweater from 1992. Between the vintage aspect and Carlton (who was definitely a big Ralph Lauren fan) making it famous, it’ll cost you if you want one. Of the three versions on eBay right now, the “cheapest” is going for $1,089.84 while the most expensive one is listed at $2,728.00.

(14) Practical Magic

The Sweater: A bumpy brown cardigan

Who Wore It: Gillian "Gilly" Owens (Nicole Kidman), whose abusive ex-boyfriend causes even more problems dead than alive.

Replica: No

Notes: I’m iffy on the Practical Magic legacyquel coming out later this year—legacyquels, by and large, are way too referential to the original and usually suck—but the original is far more fun than the Metacritic score would have you think.

Matchup: (4) Community vs (13) National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

Credits: Hulu | Prime Video

(4) Community (3×10, “Regional Holiday Music”)

The Sweater: Two sweaters: One is green with a Black Santa face on it (bearded and with the red hat). The other is a red and white holiday-themed Fair-Isle sweater with reindeer on it

Who Wore It: Troy Barnes (Donald Glover) and Abed Nadir (Danny Pudi), Greendale Community College classmates, best buds, roommates , and the heart and soul of Community

Replica: No (and no)

Notes: Not all of Community ages well, but watching these two knuckleheads (affectionate) is always a delight. Plus, it would be amusing if they beat Pierce down here.

(13) National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

The Sweater: A red, white, and green holiday-themed Fair Isle sweater

Who Wore It: Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase), a true asshole chasing unrealistic Christmas expectations

Replica: No

Notes: I do not like Christmas Vacation at all, but it is a movie with a Christmas sweater in it, so here we are.

Matchup: (5) The Twilight Saga: New Moon vs (12) Heretic

Credits: HBO Max | Kimberley French/A24

(5) The Twilight Saga: New Moon

The Sweater: A green buttoned and hooded cardigan

Who Wore It: Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart), who has a hell of a death wish after her vampire boyfriend unceremoniously leaves her (in order to “protect” her). Needless to say, it doesn’t work.

Replica: Yes

Notes: Bella made a lot of bad choices in New Moon, but this cardigan was not one of them.

(12) Heretic

The Sweater: A burgundy, yellow, beige, blue, pink, and green checkered buttoned cardigan. The trim where the buttons are is also burgundy.

Who Wore It: Mr. Reed (Hugh Grant), who goes out of his way to make two young Missionaries’ lives hell.

Replica: No

Notes: It was definitely not my intention to pit the two Mormon-coded movies in the bracket against one another, but what can you do?

Matchup: (6) Ugly Betty vs (11) Project Hail Mary

Credits: Hulu | YouTube

(6) Ugly Betty (1×11, “Fake Plastic Snow”)

The Sweater: A red pullover sweater with a snowman attached to it (and with lights attached to the snowman)

Who Wore It: Betty Suarez (America Ferrera), the young woman who starts working at a fashion magazine and whose fashion sense is (at the start, at least), kind of non-existent.

Replica: No

Notes: I haven’t really seen Ugly Betty, but I do hope nobody made fun of this sweater because it’s really cute.

(11) Project Hail Mary

The Sweater: A white cardigan. The front features two wolf heads (depicted with reddish-brown yarn) on the sides, with two full-bodied wolves on the back

Who Wore It: Dr. Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling), a teacher (and former molecular biologist) who becomes the world’s most unlikely candidate to save humanity.

Replica: Yes

Notes: The ultimate “inside you there are two wolves” sweater.

Matchup: (7) Only Murders in the Building vs (10) Arrow

Credits: Hulu | YouTube

(7) Only Murders in the Building (5×10, “‘The House Always…’”)

The Sweater: A mesh white cardigan that allows you to see exactly what's underneath (a striped and buttoned long-sleeve shirt)

Who Wore It: Howard Morris (Michael Cyril Creighton), a resident of the Arconia who often tries to help his neighbors investigate whichever murder occurred in his building that season—as well as a fierce animal lover.

Replica: No

Notes: Notably the sluttiest cardigan in Howard’s collection, according to fellow Arconian Uma Heller (Jackie Hoffman). And it’s the main reason I made the “you can repeat the show as long as it’s a different sweater” rule.

(10) Arrow (4×09, “Dark Waters”)

The Sweater: A light gray sweater with blue and white trims on the sleeves, white smiling dreidels, and yellow Star of Davids on it

Who Wore It: Donna Smoak (Charlotte Ross), Felicity’s (Emily Bett Rickards) mom who really wants to get into the holidays.

Replica: No

Notes: I’m not sure how much of a thing Hanukkah sweaters are, but they are at least in this one instance.

Matchup: (8) Step Brothers vs (9) The Mindy Project

Credits: Prime Video | Hulu

(8) Step Brothers

The Sweater: A blue, white, red, green, and beige sweater with reindeer, snow, holly, and trees on it

Who Wore It: Dale Doback (John C. Reilly), one of the two man-children at the center of Step Brothers.

Replica: No

Notes: It’s a festive sweater, albeit one that seems to attempt painting Dale’s immaturity more than anything.

(9) The Mindy Project (2×11, “Christmas Party Sex Trap”)

The Sweater: A red, white, and blue holiday-themed Fair Isle sweater

Who Wore It: Nurse Morgan Tookers (Ike Barinholtz), who went all out for the Christmas party.

Replica: No

Notes: I know Barinholtz more from The Studio these days, but it’s still good to see him on the list.
