This is the part of the Knit Madness “daily” (or every-other-daily) call to vote where, on basically any other day of the tournament, I’d quickly go through what happened during the previous day/round of voting. But because this is the first day, I really don’t have much to say since Friday’s update.

One thing I didn’t mention in said update is how the Google Form option to vote will appear. I could link to it like this, but to make things easier for everyone, I’m turning it into a button like this!

That button will link directly to the Google Form I have set up for the Round of 64’s Cable matchups (and subsequent days’ matchups, when those happen). If you see a button that says vote, which will be embedded after every head-to-head, click it! I’m planning to paste the button in as often as I can for easier access, but you only need to click it once and you’ll be able to vote for every matchup.

Voting will close on Tuesday, March 3, two days from now.

Today’s Matchups

Matchup: (1) Sherlock vs (16) The Muppets Take Manhattan

Cred: Hulu | Prime Video

(1) Sherlock (1×01, “A Study in Pink”)

The Sweater: A gray twisted cable sweater

Who Wore It: Dr. John Watson (Martin Freeman), a former British Army doctor freshly back from Afghanistan and who’s about to get the most obnoxious roommate ever.

Replica: Yes

Notes: Between all of the queerbaiting and blatant misogyny, the modern BBC Sherlock gets such a bad (and almost entirely earned) rap. But when it hit, it really hit.

(16) The Muppets Take Manhattan

The Sweater: A white v-neck twisted cable sweater with light blue border on the collar, bottom, and sleeves

Who Wore It: Kermit the Frog, who is about to take Broadway by storm—if he can make it through the wedding first.

Replica: No

Notes: I was raised on the Muppets, so it was to my absolute delight to watch The Muppets Take Manhattan—a wild movie that includes amnesia, rats running the kitchen, Kermit going full Don Draper, and the origin of Muppet Babies—for the first time in years over the holidays to see Kermit rocking those cables in the middle of his Broadway show’s big opening number.

Matchup: (2) Call the Midwife vs (15) The Night Agent

Credits: Netflix | Netflix

(2) Call the Midwife (7×01, “Episode 1”)

The Sweater: A white Aran sweater with a shawl collar

Who Wore It: Nurse Beatrix "Trixie" Franklin (Helen George)

Replica: No

Notes: I know basically nothing about Call the Midwife (a common refrain this tournament tbh), but I can confirm that it’s a very good sweater.

(15) The Night Agent (1×03, “The Zookeeper”)

The Sweater: A charcoal cable-knit sweater

Who Wore It: Paulo Bonetto (Greyston Holt), a Georgetown University art teacher who has Yellowjackets’ Callie Sadecki (Sarah Desjardins) as one of his students.

Replica: Yes/No

Notes: When I went to look up the episode title this sweater shows up in on Wikipedia, there’s a notice that says “This episode's plot summary may be too long or excessively detailed.” Which, rude.

Matchup: (3) Classic Doctor Who vs (14) The Jane Austen Book Club

Credits: BritBox | Hulu

(3) Classic Doctor Who (19×01, “Castrovalva: Part One”)

The Sweater: A white v-neck twisted cable cricket sweater with red and black trim along the collar

Who Wore It: The newly regenerated Fifth Doctor (Peter Davison), who’d one day be an in-law to the Tenth (David Tennant).

Replica: Yes

Notes: This shot comes very early into Davison’s first episode when he’s picking out his signature look, which includes him fake-swinging a cricket bat in front of a mirror and is very charming.

(14) The Jane Austen Book Club

The Sweater: A chunky white Aran cardigan

Who Wore It: Jocelyn (Maria Bello), who is set to host the Jane Austen book club meeting to discuss Mansfield Park.

Replica: Yes

Notes: Despite Jocelyn’s link to Fanny Price’s story, she relates a lot more to Emma Woodhouse.

Matchup: (4) Big Fish vs (13) How to Get to Heaven from Belfast

Credits: YouTube | Netflix

(4) Big Fish

The Sweater: A pink cable-knit duster cardigan

Who Wore It: Joséphine (Marion Cotillard), who married a guy and is now listening to the very tall tales of her father-in-law.

Replica: Yes

Notes: I went through this film multiple times to get a screengrab of this sweater and I still couldn’t tell you what it was about.

(13) How to Get to Heaven from Belfast (1×01, “The Wake”)

The Sweater: A green cable-knit sweater

Who Wore It: Saoirse Shaw (Roisin Gallagher), a TV writer who joins two of her friends to attend the wake of the estranged member of their group. Needless to say, it probably doesn’t go as planned.

Replica: No

Notes: This show only came out a little over two weeks ago, but it’s from Lisa McGee, the genius behind Derry Girls, so I have very high hopes for it.

Matchup: (5) The Bear vs (12) Percy Jackson and the Olympians

Credits: Chuck Hodes/FX | David Bukach/Disney

(5) The Bear (2×03, “Sundae”)

The Sweater: A light gray twisted cable sweater

Who Wore It: Carmen "Carmy" Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White), a talented chef who definitely needs therapy.

Replica: No

Notes: I haven’t seen The Bear and have no interest in ever doing so, but I will at least admit this sweater is good.

(12) Percy Jackson and the Olympians (2×03, “We Board the Princess Andromeda”)

The Sweater: A white v-neck twisted cable sweater with a navy blue and yellow striped trim along the collar and sleeves

Who Wore It: Luke Castellan (Charlie Bushnell), a demigod (and son of Hermes) who’s leading the attempt to bring Kronos and the Titans back to Earth and is the primary (mortal) antagonist of the series

Replica: No

Notes: I had already meant to catch up with PJO season 2 before going screenshot hunting, but it was worth it for the streaming wars joke alone. I was very successfully pandered to by the guys who made Black Sails, and given that there are at least a few 2008 Phillies players’ names included among the show’s minor characters (like Lieutenant Utley), it’s not the first time I’ve been pandered to by them.

Matchup: (6) Succession vs (11) The Summer I Turned Pretty

Credits: Peter Kramer/HBO | Prime Video

(6) Succession (1×07, “Austerlitz”)

The Sweater: A dark blue cabled shawl cardigan

Who Wore It: Logan Roy (Brian Cox), the patriarch of the Murdoch Roy family who makes his children dance and metaphorically stab each other in the back for the chance to run their mega-corporation that’s like Fox News meets Disney. And somehow seems almost quaint in the years since Succession ended.

Replica: Yes

Notes: I honestly could’ve picked any of Logan’s shawl cardigans (even if Vulture hated the brown one I put in Friday’s newsletter) for this because I want them all and only really went with the navy number pictured above because I could link to a replica pattern.

(11) The Summer I Turned Pretty (3×10, “Last Year”)

The Sweater: A green cable-knit sweater

Who Wore It: Conrad Fisher (Christopher Briney), the sensitive but moody romantic hero at the center of one of 2025’s most addictive series (and one-third of its equally gripping love triangle).

Replica: No

Notes: I confess that I have not any full TSITP episodes (one day!) But I did witness the mass psychosis (affectionate) around its third season and how the end of the series made those rooting for Conrad the whole time and I’m very happy for you.

Matchup: (7) The Banshees of Inisherin vs (10) The Worst Person in the World

Credits: FXNow | Tubi

(7) The Banshees of Inisherin

The Sweater: A teal gansey sweater

Who Wore It: Colm Doherty (Brendan Gleeson), who’s so over his former best friend that he’s willing to chop off his own fingers to get the point across.

Replica: No

Notes: It’s the first of three—or four, depending on how you count two separate Star Trek franchises—titles returning to Knit Madness, but I think it’s a very different sweater than Colin Farrell’s red collared pullover that became the film’s breakout hit.

(10) The Worst Person in the World

The Sweater: A white Aran sweater

Who Wore It: Julie (Renate Reinsve), whose 20s and 30s take her on a hell of a journey—and a gutting one, at times.

Replica: No

Notes: This is far from the most memorable outfit Julie wears over the film’s 12 chapters, but it remains my favorite anyway.

Matchup: (8) The Terror vs (9) Inside Llewyn Davis

Credits: Prime Video | CBS Films

(8) The Terror (1×07, “Horrible from Supper”)

The Sweater: A white gansey sweater that's part of a British naval uniform

Who Wore It: Commander James Fitzjames (Tobias Menzies), the captain of one of the two ships part of the doomed Franklin Expedition at the center of The Terror’s first season and for whom being icebound becomes the least of his troubles.

Replica: Yes

Notes: I cannot stress enough how good the first season of The Terror, a show I got to write a bit about at the Dot (although one of the pieces I was fond of is no longer online), is. Season 1 is on Prime Video, while both seasons of the anthology are on AMC+, and you should run, not walk, to stream it.

(9) Inside Llewyn Davis

The Sweater: Four traditional Irish white Aran sweaters, each with different styles of cables

Who Wore It: Four Irish Singers (Erik Hayden, Jeff Takacs, Declan Bennett, & Daniel Everidge), who sound lovely but mostly annoy Llewyn Davis (Oscar Isaac). He’s a fan of those sweaters, though.

Replica: No

Notes: The Coen Brothers’ nod to the Clancy Brothers—the Irish folk music group who were known for their Aran knits as much as their voices—is short and sweet, but I imagine they could also make for tumultuous protagonists in a different movie.
