In which I put the vast majority of my knitting thoughts in one place

Yes, this is a newsletter about the marriage of knitting and TV/film—and occasionally some Notable Cinematic Knitwear.

A blonde Icelandic woman clutches a brown cable-knit sweater and smells it while standing near the ocean in 'Zack Snyder's Justice League'

I have no idea who this character in the SnyderCut is supposed to be or why she’s clutching Arthur Curry’s first cable-knit sweater, sniffing it, and holding onto it for dear life. But also, same. (Source: HBO Max)

I’m Michelle Jaworski, an entertainment reporter, a TV/film critic, and an amateur knitter. Most of the time, those entities don’t cross over. But on rare occasions—like when a sweater becomes the breakout star of a whodunit, a fisherman sweater shows up in a Star War, a famous actor wears an Aran sweater in a first look photo and becomes a meme, or when you can explore a decades-old fandom practice—they hit a cozy sweet spot.

On many nights, you’ll find me winding down with a knitting project while watching or catching up on some movie or TV show. I find it soothing and it helps to alleviate a lot of stress.

So, Knit(ting) Flicks?

This newsletter allows me to write about knitting/knitwear and whatever I’m catching up on while those needles click away without clogging up people’s Twitter feeds too much. It’s here in Janet’s Void so that you (or whoever else) has to seek it out. And unlike my Twitter feed, it won’t self-delete in about a year.

Sometimes, the latest movie I just watched came out several years ago and I’m just getting to now, or a TV show whose zeitgeist-y moment already passed a month ago; are you aware that there is simply Too Much TV to keep up with? Sometimes, I want to talk about the inner workings of whatever I’m attempting to make or a new skill I’m teaching myself through some decade-old YouTube videos. I might just want to share photos of lovely actors wearing great pieces of knitwear, even if all I have to say about it is “I love this.” (Yes, I’ve written thousands of words about movie knitwear already, but sometimes, all you need to say is that that particular Sweater is Good.)

What’s the game plan?

I’m doing this completely for fun, so basically I will write whenever I strike the fancy; maybe a few times a month. (IDK, really.) For the time being (and I don’t see this changing anytime soon), everything will be free.

I want to feature at least one thing I’m watching, one thing I’m knitting—new newsletters will arrive when at least one of those categories. Because I’m a reporter/critic who still writes things on the internet and I need people to read what I put out there, I’ll shamelessly plug reviews and features I have coming down the pipeline. (In a previous life, I covered Game of Thrones obsessively, and I imagine I’ll get pretty deep into House of the Dragon, too.) I occasionally dabble with crochet, so this isn’t a knitting-only space. And while I can’t guarantee a newsletter will teach anyone to knit, if you have questions about knitting, I can answer them here.

I hope to get an actual post up in the next week, so you won’t have to wait too long to hear from me again.

Want to chat more/find out more about what I’m knitting or watching at any particular time? You can find some of my other random thoughts and photos on Twitter, Instagram, Ravelry, and Letterboxd.
